Research commissioned by BusinessWaste.co.uk has identified Oxford as ranking 22nd across South East localities for perilous illegal waste disposal.

The investigation highlights the growing issue of unlawfully discarded dangerous materials, encompassing asbestos, fuel, and chemical substances.

In contrast to standard household refuse, hazardous waste unlawfully deposited poses substantially elevated risks to public wellbeing. London registered the highest frequency throughout the region at 2.68 incidents per 10,000 inhabitants, with the North West trailing marginally at 2.60.

The South East occupied fourth position with 1.99 hazardous illegal dumping occurrences per 10,000 residents.

Mark Hall, an Oxford-based waste management professional affiliated with BusinessWaste.co.uk, stated that all illegal waste disposal damages the natural environment and surrounding community, though hazardous substances are particularly concerning given their toxic, persistent or chemically reactive characteristics.

He noted that materials including asbestos, oils, chemicals and fuels are not merely more noxious but also typically necessitate specialist handling and removal.

When mishandled, these substances can contaminate soil and water sources, release harmful particles into the air, and create dangers for both householders and council workers.

Incidents of hazardous illegal dumping frequently involve either members of the public or unregulated waste operators who dispose of materials unlawfully to circumvent costs or the complexities of proper treatment.

Mr Hall recommended that anyone who encounters illegally dumped waste should avoid the area entirely and contact the local council immediately, as authorities possess the capability to assess the materials and arrange their safe removal.
