A firefighter based at Bicester Fire Station will take part in this weekend’s London Marathon to honour two colleagues who lost their lives while attending an emergency call.
Jamie Gough will tackle the 26.2-mile route to pay tribute to Jennie Logan and Martyn Sadler, both of whom died during a major fire at Bicester Motion in May.
All money raised through his challenge will be donated to The Fire Fighters Charity, which he indicated was a sincere dedication to his late friends.
Mr Gough explained he was running the London Marathon for The Fire Fighters Charity, remembering Jen and Martyn, two exceptional friends and colleagues who tragically lost their lives in service this year.
Both individuals showed steadfast dedication to their crew, their local community, and the profession they loved.
Ms Logan was remembered as brave and deeply caring, while Mr Sadler was recalled as calm, dependable, and someone you would want by your side during the toughest situations.
Mr Gough recognised the race would be tough but felt well-prepared, pointing to the support he has received.
The Fire Fighters Charity provides vital support to fire and rescue workers and their families, including mental health services, physical therapy, and community help.
Bicester Fire Station has voiced its support for Mr Gough’s marathon undertaking.
A station representative offered best wishes to firefighter Gough from Bicester Fire Station as he takes on the London Marathon, noting that the entire station will be cheering him on, Jamie.
The Bicester Motion fire happened on May 15, killing firefighters Martyn Sadler, aged 38, and Jennie Logan, aged 30, along with Dave Chester, a 57-year-old member of the public.
The incident profoundly affected the local community and prompted numerous messages of condolence and support.
Oxford City Council lowered the flag at the town hall to half-mast, and flowers were placed at various locations throughout Bicester.
In memory of Ms Logan and Mr Sadler, Bicester Rugby Football Union Club has gathered more than £57,000 for The Fire Fighters Charity.
Another Bicester resident, Chris Dabell, is also running in this weekend’s London Marathon to remember those who died in the Bicester Motion fire.
He plans to complete the race wearing full firefighter gear weighing approximately 20kg, including boots, breathing apparatus, and a helmet.
Mr Dabell, former chairman of Bicester Rugby Club, knew both Mr Sadler and Ms Logan through rugby.
He indicated the charity had responded very positively to his idea and viewed the marathon as a fitting way to acknowledge the fire service and highlight the work carried out by emergency workers.
So far, Mr Dabell has raised over £20,000 through fundraising efforts and community support.
