Tax office calls on 750,000 to find £2,200 hidden in old accounts

Published on

A national campaign has been launched as hundreds of thousands of young adults may have funds sitting in accounts they are completely unaware of.

Officials warn that numerous individuals have not recognised that they possess savings in accounts they had previously forgotten about, and are now increasing their attempts to put people back in touch with these assets.

The initiative centres on Child Trust Funds, which were established for children born from 2002 through to 2011.

HMRC reports that over 750,000 of these accounts have yet to be claimed.

The typical value of each account stands at approximately £2,200.

Why individuals are only discovering these funds now

Many people with these accounts have no idea the money is there.

To address this situation, authorities will start reaching out to thousands of young adults directly, commencing with those aged 21 who have not yet accessed their accounts.

The aim is to enable more individuals to locate savings that could assist them during the transition to adulthood.

According to a post from HMRC on 18 April 2026, those born between 1 September 2002 and 2 January 2011 may possess a Child Trust Fund ready to claim upon turning 18, with further information available.

The internal effort

The Treasury is directing this campaign, with Lucy Rigby collaborating alongside financial institutions and savings firms to increase recognition.

Government representatives indicate the objective is straightforward: ensuring nobody loses out on funds that are rightfully theirs.

How to verify if money is owed to you

A free digital resource exists on GOV.UK enabling individuals to locate their account manager.

The process requires only a brief period and could uncover funds that have remained dormant for years.

Given the substantial number of accounts still waiting to be reclaimed, the core message is evident.

You might have money waiting for you without any awareness of its existence.
