A self-sufficient bakery based in Blewbury has left its original premises, closing down before moving to new facilities in Wallingford.

Blewbury Bread Co. launched six years ago from the garage of its creator, Jack O’Nolan, with every loaf and sweet treat produced there ever since.

The company has expanded to provide goods for multiple stockists such as the Bread Shed at Savages Garden Centre in Blewbury, Root One Garden Centre close to Didcot, Mr & Mrs Park’s Butchers in Cholsey, and Brightwell Village Stores.

The business is now progressing with its biggest growth step: a purpose-built bakery and shop space at St Peter’s Place, Wallingford.

The last baking day in Blewbury happened on Saturday, April 18, with the new enterprise due to open very soon.

The head baker acknowledged the emotional nature of the moment, noting it was almost exactly six years to the day since operations began, with that first loaf emerging from their home ovens in April 2020. The head baker stated it was time to leave the garage bakery behind and move to the next chapter on St. Peter’s Street in Wallingford. The head baker confirmed that while baking operations would shift to the new location, they would continue to maintain their presence at Savages in Blewbury.

The head baker expressed gratitude for the support of Blewbury customers and hope to keep serving the village where operations began. The head baker described the journey as a collective effort, with tremendous support from family and friends assisting with baking, shaping, market stalls, and all the team members they have been fortunate to have over the years. The head baker stated they look forward to welcoming customers in Wallingford while also continuing to serve the Blewbury community.

The Wallingford premises will now function as the company’s only production location, selling bread, pastries, savouries, sweet treats, and further items over the counter.

Proposals to upgrade and refurbish the ground floor retail area, positioned where it meets Wood Street, were submitted to South Oxfordshire District Council in March.

New signage and corporate identity have been put up at the new shop, indicating it will open soon.

Mr O’Nolan reflected on how the moment feels appropriate for the company’s inaugural permanent premises, recalling how it began during the health crisis when bread was delivered to homes, flour was sold to raise funds for charitable causes, and pop-up stalls operated at pubs and garden centres.

A firm opening date has not been announced, though patrons are being advised to stay tuned for updates.
