Witney’s Pink event is scheduled to return this September, though its longstanding organizer will be handing over leadership duties.

During the past quarter-century, the initiative has collected over £300,000 for Against Breast Cancer, an organization based in Abingdon, largely thanks to founder Jeanne Chattoe’s work.

On Saturday 26 September, the town centre will be filled with pink again, though this year marks a significant change.

After 25 years as committee chair, Mrs Chattoe is vacating the position and taking on the title of honorary president.

She expressed that Witney loves Pink Day. She noted that the event consistently brings a vibrant, uplifting atmosphere to the town centre with its pink balloons and festively decorated shop windows, wonderful street performers, vendor stalls and vehicle procession. She said she has treasured guiding the initiative for the past 25 years, but the time feels right for her to step aside, and she is confident Pink Day remains in excellent hands.

Mrs Chattoe’s fundraising efforts began after her younger sister Delia Winkler received a breast cancer diagnosis in 1982, when she was only 30.

The disease tragically returned seven years later, and Delia died at age 41.

Mrs Chattoe remembered feeling helpless and redirected her efforts towards supporting research.

In 2023, she received recognition in the King’s Birthday Honours and was presented with the British Empire Medal for her fundraising achievements.

Alex Simpson, the incoming committee chair, said the continued success of Pink Day and the impressive total collected over the years demonstrates Jeanne’s original concept and the team’s steadfast dedication. She expressed that she is truly grateful to be taking on the role of chair and delighted to see Witney awash in pink once more on September 26 and continuing to grow.
