An engine from Oxfordshire Fire and Rescue Service continues to stay at a landfill facility in Oxfordshire as work to wet down a fire involving waste proceeds.

The service received notification regarding the Sutton Courtenay Landfill location on Appleford Road in the vicinity of Didcot at 22:26 on Tuesday, April 21.

Units from Didcot, Abingdon and Wallingford stations were dispatched alongside a water tanker from Wheatley station, utilizing hose reels to bring the waste fire under control.

Residents were instructed by the fire service to keep windows and doors shut at approximately 00:50 on Wednesday, April 22, because of an expanding smoke cloud and accompanying odor.

The wetting down operation remains in progress, with an engine still present at the location to assist with these efforts.

The duration the engine will stay at the facility and whether the site is currently operational remains unclear.

The 290.5-hectare landfill complex began operations in 1980 and accepts 350,000 tonnes of refuse annually along with 60,000 tonnes per year of quarry restoration materials and soil.
