A budget airline operating flights from Stansted Airport has halted all services to a popular destination in Spain.

Santiago de Compostela Airport in Spain’s north-western region will shut down from Thursday, April 23 until Wednesday, May 27, with all aircraft movements prohibited during this period.

Travellers from the United Kingdom, including those flying with Ryanair from Stansted, should review their itineraries and maintain communication with airlines for information about changes or cancellations.

The low-cost carrier, which runs a regular route between Stansted and the affected airport, had scheduled arrivals on April 17, 19, and 21.

Further flights will be cancelled, which could disrupt plans for tourists visiting the northern part of Spain.

Roughly 30 British aircraft land at Santiago de Compostela each week.

Santiago de Compostela functions as the capital of Galicia in Spain’s north-west.

The city represents the final destination of the ancient Camino de Santiago pilgrimage routes, includes a historic quarter designated by UNESCO, and contains the Cathedral of Santiago de Compostela.

An update published on the website of the Spanish airport operator, Aena, indicated that the facility will be shut down from 23 April to 27 May 2026 for runway resurfacing work.

Throughout this period, the airport will remain inaccessible to all aircraft operations, with no departures or arrivals permitted.

Passengers seeking information about flight statuses, schedule modifications, or alternative bookings should contact their relevant airlines.

Tourists intending to visit Santiago de Compostela must arrange alternative transportation during the closure.

The nearest viable option is A Coruña Airport, located approximately 42 miles to the north, with a journey time of just under one hour by car.
