Historic Oxford shifts from tea to coffee as consumption changes

A recent poll found that builders working on housing projects in Oxfordshire have named coffee as their favourite drink.

Construction staff employed by Barratt and David Wilson Homes revealed their top beverage and snack choices to mark the annual National Tea Day celebration on April 21.

Despite estimates suggesting Britons drink 100 million cups of tea daily, the poll showed 58 percent of those quizzed favoured coffee, with just 28 percent opting for tea.

Chanda Chileshe, who serves as sales director at the housebuilding companies, explained that when important decisions arise, nothing compares to a comforting hot beverage.

The firm said it came as no shock that builders plumped for coffee alongside popular biscuit brands Hobnob and Digestive.

Chileshe continued that whichever beverage takes someone’s fancy, the team happily makes drinks for anyone visiting to purchase their first home or upgrade to another. Potential purchasers can drop in for a cuppa and chat with the sales staff.

An overwhelming 87 percent of workers surveyed agreed that hot water should go into the cup before the tea bag when preparing a brew.

Those mindful of their health made up 61 percent of respondents, selecting their drinks without any sugar added.

Tea and coffee dominated the selections, with merely 14 percent choosing other options such as hot chocolate or herbal varieties.

For biscuit dunking purposes, Chocolate Hobnobs took the crown with 31 percent backing, narrowly beating Chocolate Digestives which secured 26 percent.

Other biscuits getting mentions included shortbread, rich tea, and various cookies.
