A garage proprietor from Wallingford is warning vehicle operators about the dangers deer present on rural highways following a coroner’s inquiry into a fatal wildlife collision.
Motorcyclist Yawo Avou, a local of Medmenham in the Marlow district but who worked as a delivery driver for Grundon Water Management in Ewelme for more than 13 years, died on October 16, 2025.
The 63-year-old, who came from Togo in Africa, was riding his Yamaha FJY 1300 motorbike along the A4130 heading toward Wallingford for work at approximately 4.50am on October 13.
His machine struck a deer that had run onto the road at Port Hill in Nettlebed, ejecting him from the vehicle and causing devastating injuries.
He died three days later at John Radcliffe Hospital in Oxford on October 16.
An inquest held at Oxfordshire Coroner’s Court on Thursday, April 9 looked into the circumstances of the crash and his subsequent decline.
In testimony given to the court, Mr. Avou’s wife Kim Avou said he was a committed husband, father and grandfather and a respected member of the community. She said his death had greatly affected her, their daughter and grandchildren along with relatives overseas in Africa.
She managed to speak with her husband at the crash scene while he remained conscious but was unable to move, and he had asked other drivers who stopped to help get in touch with his wife.
The motorcyclist told Mrs. Avou that he had seen the deer at the roadside from some way off, but it had retreated before suddenly bolting across when he was too close to avoid it.
The impact killed the deer and propelled Mr. Avou from his motorbike, with both him and the machine coming to rest on the opposite carriageway roughly five metres away.
The court received a statement from Thames Valley Police confirming the incident was caused by the sudden and unpredictable movement of a deer onto the road, and the coroner found Mr. Avou was not at fault.
The verdict was that his death resulted from multiple organ failure and polytrauma injuries sustained in the road traffic incident.
Mark Brett MBE, who runs Haynes Car Care Centre in Wallingford, called on motorists to stay watchful for wildlife on countryside roads in the area surrounding the town.
He pointed out that deer constitute one of the most serious dangers for drivers because of their size and unpredictable behaviour, while even smaller creatures such as birds can cause damage, particularly at higher speeds or if drivers make sudden steering movements.
Mr. Brett observed that animals of different sizes can create hazards on the road. Staying alert and driving carefully can be vital in avoiding accidents.
The car servicing business owner advised motorists to reduce speed on rural roads without lighting, keep a sharp lookout and avoid making evasive turns when possible, as such manoeuvres can lead to more catastrophic impacts.
