Residents across Oxfordshire can take comfort in knowing the county council’s proposal to shutter several fire stations has essentially been abandoned.

Those living in and around Henley, Eynsham and Woodstock will be particularly pleased that their communities will remain somewhat safer during emergencies.

The Fire Brigades’ Union’s campaign emphasizing that cuts can be fatal carries significant weight, as frontline firefighters possess the most credible perspective on the dangers of reducing fire service resources.

The fact that over 1,000 individuals engaged with Oxfordshire County Council’s consultation to share their views on the proposed fire and rescue service reductions speaks volumes.

County Hall had previously argued that station closures would enhance the fire and rescue service’s efficiency.

This primarily addressed the challenge of maintaining adequate staffing levels during shifts, which was not being achieved at the three previously targeted stations.

Instead, efforts will concentrate on evaluating and modifying recruitment strategies for Eynsham, Henley and Woodstock, with the goal of boosting on-call firefighter numbers and enhancing fire engine readiness.

Additionally, the planned North Oxford station intended to replace the Rewley Road and Kidlington facilities has been postponed indefinitely.

A new North Oxford facility would ideally complement existing stations, assuming funding permits.

Traffic congestion in Oxford continues to worsen, the region is experiencing population growth, residential development is expanding on the outskirts, research facilities are multiplying, and associated risks are increasing.

What disadvantage would there be in adding another station alongside the city’s two existing facilities at Rewley Road and Slade Park?

Simple calculations indicate that with a city population of 165,200, Oxford has approximately one fire station for every 82,600 residents. In contrast, Bath maintains roughly one station per 35,200 people.

However, at the county level, the ratio improves to approximately one fire station for every 27,000 to 28,000 Oxfordshire residents.

Neil Fawcett, a cabinet member at Oxfordshire County Council, captured the sentiment regarding the fire and rescue service accurately.

He stated that the consultation responses demonstrated how crucial the fire service is to local communities and how much residents value the dedication and commitment of firefighters.

He noted that the “strength of feeling for retaining community fire stations is crystal clear.”

We may critique the police for failing to respond to crimes or inadequately investigating incidents. We may criticize the NHS for delayed emergency responses or excessive administrative layers.

Yet we find it difficult tofault the fire service’s brave men and women who swiftly come to our aid during our most critical moments.
