A celebrated French group will headline an energetic dance event taking place later this month.

Cosmos Chocolat, an award-winning quartet renowned for their modern approach to traditional French folk music, is set to perform at Kennington Village Centre in Oxford on Sunday, April 26.

This marks a collaboration between Balfolk Oxford and Oxfolk Ceilidhs, following their capacity-crowd French dance show at the Oxford Folk Festival earlier this month.

The ensemble will present an evening packed with rhythm and movement, featuring the hurdy-gurdy, accordion, fiddle, and the French boha bagpipes.

Before the main celebration, a beginner-friendly introduction will be led by Kerry Fletcher, among Britain’s most prominent teachers of French dance and Co-Artistic Director of Folk Dance Remixed.

A Balfolk Oxford spokesperson explained that some dances require partners while others form circles, and some snake through space in long, mesmerising lines. Every style overflows with vitality, spirit, and deep cultural roots. For those with no prior experience of balfolk, this offers a wonderful chance to pick up some steps and listen to music from an outstanding group.

The workshop starts at 3.30pm, with the principal dance gathering running from 4.30pm until 6.30pm.

A bal denotes an informal European-style gathering centred on folk dance and music, open to everyone.

Attendees are encouraged to bring family members, partners, children, and even their four-legged friends along to join in the dancing.
