A man aged 21 with a string of previous offences has been jailed for choking his mother after an argument.

Callum Hunter, whose address was given as Goldsmiths Lane in Wallingford, received his sentence at Oxford Crown Court on April 17.

The defendant faced several charges connected to events that took place in Wallingford on February 4 this year.

Hunter pleaded guilty to breaching a non-molestation order, deliberate strangulation, and driving without valid insurance.

The court heard that the person who brought the complaint is the defendant’s own mother.

Proceedings showed that a pre-sentence report had not been prepared, although the defendant asked to be sentenced immediately.

Alexandra Bushell, for the prosecution, outlined that Hunter had been bound by a restraining order preventing him from contacting his mother, which had been put in place following a harassment conviction in December the year before.

As a result, Hunter had been living at his grandmother’s house, though his mother would sometimes come to see him.

Mrs. Hunter saw her son taking drugs during one of these visits, which sparked a disagreement, the prosecutor said.

The prosecution told the court that he placed his hands around her throat and pushed her into the main living area.

The court was informed that Mrs. Hunter had to shield her own mother and sister from the defendant.

The prosecutor added that he forcefully slammed the front door and kicked it while in a rage, causing considerable alarm and upset.

Police and paramedics were called out, and Hunter made his escape on a motorbike. Officers arrested him the next day.

The court was told that Hunter has previously been convicted four times for six separate offences, all connected to his mother.

The prosecutor remarked that this took place in a domestic violence setting and that as a mother, she finds herself in a very difficult predicament.

Nick Cotter, for the defence, said that Hunter has been held in custody since he first appeared before magistrates in February.

He went on to say that he is still only 21 years old and is a young person. His behaviour in court today is much steadier than in earlier meetings. His previous conduct was extremely volatile.

He was set upon at Bullingdon three times. His mother has since paid off an outstanding drugs debt.

In his view, he displays considerable childishness. His mother still looks after him, and he still loves her.

His time in custody has given him space to think. His mother worries about how he is coping inside the prison system.

Judge Ian Pringle KC stated that he has been in court on several occasions for matters concerning his mother.

A confrontation developed between him and his mother, and he strangled her. This behaviour is completely unacceptable and truly deplorable.

Hunter was handed an 18-month prison term and banned from going to his grandmother’s home.

He was also penalised with six points on his driving licence.
