A non-stop table tennis session lasting an entire day collected more than £3,000 for a cancer support charity.

The 24-hour event drew 26 players ranging from eight years old to almost 80 years old. The gathering took place to raise money for The Hummingbird Centre, which offers help to people affected by cancer.

The charity drive was staged at the centre’s premises in Launton, near Bicester, beginning at 8pm on Friday, April 10, and finishing at 8pm the following evening.

Ian Critchley, a co-organiser from Fritwell Table Tennis Club, said the occasion was tremendous. He noted that things became rather competitive at points, although the scoring system encountered some problems during the small hours. He added that it was thoroughly enjoyable throughout with plenty of laughter from start to finish.

Paul Harris, a trustee at The Hummingbird Centre, observed that the event brought together members of the local community.

He said numerous supporters, relatives and acquaintances dropped in to visit. Some had never previously known about the centre, but attended after learning about the event to take part and demonstrate their backing.

Since launching in 2014, The Hummingbird Centre has assisted thousands of people.

The charity functions entirely through donations and the work of volunteers, providing therapeutic sessions, counselling and recreational activities for visitors.
