Oxford motorists warned over M40 and A34 closures this weekend

Published on

Drivers in Oxfordshire should prepare for road closures this weekend due to planned maintenance works.

A series of closures will take place on the M40 between Friday, April 17 and Monday, April 20, for planned maintenance works.

Additionally, the A34 will also face closures during the same period.

Motorists are advised to check for potential diversions before setting out to find the best route.

UK speed limits explained

You can find more information on road closures across England on the National Highways website.

Benson Parish Council shared a road closure that could affect drivers across several weeks – Benson Hale Road at the junction of Sands Way and Sunnyside.

Sewer works started on March 9 and are due to continue for up to two months.

You can find out more about the closure via the Benson Parish Council website.

How old is the M40, and where is it?

The M40’s first section was opened in 1967, the RAC explains.

It adds: “The M40 is the motorway that links the UK’s two biggest cities – London and Birmingham.

“It spans 89 miles in length, starting at Uxbridge – which is Junction 1 – and ending at Junction 17, Birmingham.”

On the M40, you’ll pass “a number of major UK cities”, and you can use it to connect you “to other key motorways.”

The RAC adds: “Junction 1a connects to the M1 via Watford, Heathrow Airport via the M4, and the M25, the London circular and the UK’s busiest motorway.

“Motorists using the M40 can also reach High Wycombe, Oxford – connecting to the A40 – Bicester, Northampton and Warwick.

“Once the M40 reaches junction 17 it becomes the M42, and motorists can drive on to Birmingham and further north by taking the M6, or towards the south west on the M5.”
