An Ofsted inspection has resulted in commendation for Ashbury with Compton Beauchamp Church of England Primary School.

The school was acknowledged for equipping children with an excellent start, promoting robust personal development, and providing highly effective welfare services.

The evaluation identified numerous strengths across the institution, including strong Early Years and Personal Development provision, and described the school as having a solid community atmosphere.

Headteacher Tim Miller expressed pride in the assessment, noting it reflects the commitment, vision, and hard work of the entire school community. He emphasised that recognition of the strong foundation given to the youngest learners was particularly satisfying, alongside appreciation for how older pupils demonstrate exemplary behaviour in their small rural setting.

Inspectors noted purposeful teaching, comprehensive vocabulary development, and carefully planned play and learning experiences. Senior pupils were also highlighted for supporting younger children and contributing to a nurturing school environment.

The report praised the school’s highly effective pastoral support, observing that staff have deep understanding of their pupils and ensure children feel safe, supported, and confident in their abilities. The inspection confirmed robust safeguarding practices and excellent student care.

Miller commented that the positive recognition of pastoral support and personal development provision was welcome, as these aspects form the core of the school’s ethos and ensure children feel secure, supported, and ready to learn. He stressed that while celebrating these achievements, the school remains committed to continuously improving outcomes for all pupils.

Pupils were described as confident, polite, and active participants in school life, with opportunities for character development and assuming leadership positions.

Richard Evans, chief executive of Cambrian Learning Trust, described the Ofsted result as excellent and worthy of celebration across the school community. He noted it demonstrates the Trust’s mission to nurture development and inspire learning, along with the commitment to building strong foundations for achievement and enabling all to succeed while promoting integrity and compassion. He welcomed the recognition of Early Years and personal development strengths and appreciated the acknowledgement of the school’s effective pastoral care.

Ofsted highlighted areas needing further focus, noting that some pupils still have learning gaps and that curriculum refinements continue to be rolled out.

School leaders have already implemented measures, with visible improvements in reading and writing and continued work to strengthen mathematics teaching.

The school stays committed to ensuring every child achieves academically, socially, and emotionally within its welcoming, supportive, and ambitious setting.
