A full year has elapsed since allegations surfaced that the creator of the Harry Potter series would never forgive the Oxford University student who portrayed Hermione Granger on screen.

The 36-year-old artist depicted the cherished Hogwarts witch throughout all eight entries of the movie series, acting alongside her fellow performers.

Following her acclaimed portrayal in the fantasy franchise, the actress redirected her attention toward scholarly pursuits. She also featured in Hollywood productions such as The Perks of Being a Wallflower and Little Women.

She commenced a master’s programme in creative writing at the prestigious institution during autumn 2023.

It was disclosed in early 2025 that the actress had upgraded to a DPhil programme, which denotes Oxford’s equivalent of a doctorate.

The writer originated the book series and contributed to bringing the film adaptations to completion, additionally helping select the young performer for the now-iconic role.

Strain developed between them after the author published five points regarding contemporary trans activism and subsequently encountered criticism from the actress.

A more recent exchange took place in spring 2025 when the author was presented with an online question regarding which performer immediately ruins a film for audiences. She responded that she had three attempts and apologized, noting that she found it impossible to resist making the comment. The author included laughing emojis to convey levity, though numerous individuals understood the post as aimed at the actress and her Harry Potter co-stars.

Subsequently, approximately one year earlier, reports indicated that the author would never forgive the actress. The account specified this stance was communicated after the film franchise performers critiqued her alongside other women who maintain that sex represents biological reality.

This followed the release of the Cass Report, which established that gender identity services were founded on limited evidence.

A social media commentator at that time expressed hope that the actor and actress would offer apologies, observing they were confident the author would grant forgiveness. The author responded that this confidence would be misplaced, adding that celebrities who allied themselves with a movement seeking to erode women’s hard-won rights and who utilized their public platforms to encourage the transitioning of minors could keep their apologies for traumatized individuals who have detransitioned and vulnerable women reliant upon single-sex spaces.

The relationship between the author and actress deteriorated further later that year following the actress’s appearance on Jay Shetty’s On Purpose podcast. The performer stated that it was her most profound hope that individuals who did not share her viewpoint would continue to care for her, and that she could maintain affection for those with whom she might disagree.

This prompted a detailed rebuttal from the author on social media, who stated that like other individuals who had never experienced adulthood without the cushioning of wealth and fame, Emma possessed so little exposure to actual life that she remained unaware of her own ignorance. The author said she would be astonished if Emma had entered a typical retail fitting room since childhood, noting that her public restroom was single-occupancy and accompanied by security personnel stationed outside.

The wealthy author declared that she experienced poverty while crafting the work that established Emma’s fame and consequently comprehended from her own life experience what the undermining of women’s rights in which Emma had so eagerly participated signified for women and girls who did not share her advantages.
