A formal objection has been lodged after toilet facilities were shut down at a popular recreational area in Oxfordshire.

Rosie Jones visits The Leys site in Witney almost every day and said she was startled to find the services there had been ended.

West Oxfordshire District Council stopped running six of the 13 public lavatories it oversees at the end of March while announcing upgrades at other sites, particularly Langdale Gate in Witney.

Councillor Lidia Arciszewska, holding the portfolio for environmental services, explained that decisions were based on usage figures.

She said that in areas where facilities are closing, appropriate alternatives are available nearby, so local people will not be left without provisions.

The strategy is intended to provide better, more attractive amenities in places with the greatest need while being prudent with public money.

However, Ms Jones said she could not find any replacement facilities within the area.

She questioned whether the toilets should remain open until Courtside is operational and suggested they could be reopened until the new facilities at Courtside are ready.

Courtside refers to a newly built complex combining various uses along with a community cafe currently being constructed at the site.

The full opening is planned for late May, with a takeaway counter already trading there while construction continues.
