Oxford officers remove 25+ cars in four-hour operation

During a four-hour crackdown in Oxford led by Thames Valley Police, authorities seized more than 25 vehicles.

Officers carried out patrols along Cowley Road on the afternoon of Tuesday, April 14.

The action led to the confiscation of 19 pedal cycles that had been fitted with illegal modifications, along with six scooters operating without proper authorisation.

One car was also taken into custody after officers established that the motorist possessed no valid driving documentation. Two additional people were arrested on suspicion of breaking immigration regulations.

On-the-spot traffic reports were issued for defective tyres, handheld mobile phone usage while driving, and operating vehicles without appropriate authorisation.

Three instances of seatbelt non-compliance were documented, with two of these involving juvenile passengers, according to a Thames Valley Police official.

Individuals from whom vehicles were taken have been reported for their respective offences and face penalties, financial fines, and possible court proceedings.

A Thames Valley Police representative explained on Tuesday night that the Roads Policing Tasking Team had partnered with the East Oxford City Neighbourhood Policing Team to concentrate specifically on pedal cycles fitted with illegal modifications and unauthorised e-scooters.

The initiative was not aimed at responsibly operated legitimate electrically assisted pedal cycles. The priority stayed on cycles equipped with oversized batteries and potent motors enabling speeds reaching 40mph.

These machines qualify as motor vehicles yet typically operate without insurance and outside regulatory frameworks.

These unlawful vehicles frequently ride on footpaths, weave through flowing traffic, and create serious dangers for pedestrians, fellow road users, and themselves.

When involved in collisions, they fail to remain at the scene, and none carried insurance protection.

The operation additionally received assistance from Roads Policing Tasking Team Specials officers and Immigration Enforcement officers, allowing thorough enforcement coverage across the district.

This work demonstrates our ongoing commitment to ensuring road and pavement safety for everyone, particularly defenceless road users and children.
