The television star famed for her depiction of a controversial street resident is taking on the celebrated songstress renowned for her lack of vocal talent.

The Coronation Street favourite is embodying Florence Foster Jenkins in the twentieth anniversary staging of Glorious! at the Oxford Playhouse, with shows running until Saturday, April 18.

Florence Foster Jenkins was an American socialite who became famous for her complete lack of musical prowess, yet somehow managed to fill concert venues with her spectacularly poor singing.

The performer, who gained fame as Cilla Battersby in Coronation Street, mentioned that the previous March, she portrayed Florence at the Hope Mill theatre in Manchester. She described it as a wonderful experience that demanded considerable effort. She had to master the technique of singing opera badly.

She works primarily in musical theatre; her career began with productions like Guys and Dolls and Sondheim’s Into the Woods. More recently, she featured in Sister Act.

Because she possesses genuine singing ability, delivering off-key performances proved particularly challenging.

Florence sings four significant pieces in the show, including Mozart’s Queen of the Night from The Magic Flute.

She started by perfecting the piece. Then, collaborating with the musical director, they modified specific notes where she would go flat or disrupt the phrasing.

Her vocal strength exceeds Frances’s, so she needed to concentrate on producing a thinner, more reedy sound.

Peters reflected on whether Jenkins comprehended the truth about her limitations.

She noted that she wonders about this. In her view, there must have been moments when it crossed her mind that audiences were chuckling at her rather than admiring her, and there would be a reason for that.

The production balances comedy with genuine emotional resonance, particularly in its later sections.

She added that this is certainly true, particularly during the second half.

On the other hand, Jenkins achieved her ambition of performing for three thousand people at Carnegie Hall, which would have caused her financial ruin had the concert not sold out completely.

So the woman possessed extraordinary courage.

Yet despite all her musical shortcomings, she could sense she was beloved, could see she was providing entertainment for audiences.

Nevertheless, it sadly reflects something about human nature that people find pleasure in watching someone perform badly.

Though one might simply look at the early auditions on X Factor.

For many audiences, Peters is best known for her work on Coronation Street, a role that dramatically altered her career path.

She noted that she had been working professionally for ten years when she landed the Cilla part, but there is no question that the character opened countless doors for her.

Glorious! demonstrates this perfectly. She feels grateful to the character, although within a week of appearing on Corrie, people began recognising her in public.

One cannot truly grasp the influence of a soap opera until experiencing it firsthand as a recurring cast member.

Peters enjoyed bringing the scheming yet troublesome character to life, even if she would not want such a person living nearby.

She described that at first, the character was mischievous and enjoyable but quickly became rather problematic.

She was not committing homicide but was genuinely disruptive.

She does not think anyone on the cobbles liked her, but she loved playing her, though she would not want to have her as a neighbour.

She would have made an awful neighbour.

Portraying villains is always more entertaining.

Peters left the soap in 2007 after four years, wanting to return to theatre and spend more time with her daughter.

She said she wanted to return to other pursuits such as theatre and pantomime.

Additionally, she was living in London at the time, requiring frequent journeys to Manchester, and she was missing her young daughter, Gracie, who was only four when she started playing Cilla.

Happily, they did not kill off the character, so she remains somewhere out there.

Peters remains open to a potential return but is currently focused on her latest role.

She said people constantly ask this question and she constantly gives the same answer: never say never.

If they offered an irresistible storyline, she might consider it.

However, she is far too busy at present.

Her thoughts are occupied with Florence.
