A toddler was taken to hospital in Oxford after being struck on the A40 close to a McDonald’s outlet, with injuries described as serious.

The young child, estimated to be approximately three years of age, was conveyed to the John Radcliffe alongside an adult woman who sustained serious but non-life-threatening wounds.

Emergency crews attended the A40 shortly before midday on Tuesday, April 14, following reports that two people on foot and a delivery van had been involved in a collision.

The crash took place adjacent to the McDonald’s branch located at the busy interchange in Headington where the A40 meets North Way and Eastern By Pass Road.

Witnesses indicated that two traffic lanes were rendered impassable and vehicle movement was severely disrupted for a considerable period lasting several hours.

The South Central Ambulance Service explained that they were alerted just before 12pm by an individual reporting that two pedestrians and a van had collided on London Road in Headington in the vicinity of the McDonald’s restaurant.

Two ambulances and the Thames Valley Air Ambulance critical care response vehicle were despatched to the location.

The pedestrians were an adult woman and a young child aged around three.

Their injuries were serious but not considered immediately life-threatening, and after receiving initial treatment at the scene, both were transferred to John Radcliffe Hospital.

The AA reported that queues of stationary traffic extended for at least one mile, with the westbound direction of the A40 remaining closed for approximately 40 minutes until reopening at 12:40 p.m.

Thames Valley Police declined to offer any comment on the incident.
