Women’s healthcare takes center stage at new Oxford art show

A new gallery display examining the evolution of medical care for women is preparing to launch in Oxford.

The showcase, called Little Fennel’s Complaint, was created by artist Olivia Plender and will run at Modern Art Oxford from May 23 through August 16.

The presentation draws inspiration from subjects spanning from historical witch trials in the early modern era to current discussions surrounding reproductive autonomy.

The artist, who was born in London, crafted the collection through investigations conducted alongside the Bodleian Library, Oxford Botanic Garden, and the John Radcliffe Hospital.

The exhibit includes embroidered textiles, watercolor pieces, drawings, mobiles, and audio installations.

Its opening section features an installation modeled after modern hospital designs and waiting area environments.

She investigates the methods through which women’s medical treatment has been documented, organized, and delivered across different periods, following the transformation of medical practices and diagnostic approaches.

Historical viewpoints are represented through Bringing Down the Flowers, a collection of watercolor works mimicking the refined botanical illustrations of the 1800s depicting flora traditionally employed to terminate pregnancies.
