A UK retail business has shut down its sole Oxfordshire outlet following its appointment of administrators, with further store closures expected in the coming weeks.

The Original Factory Shop, which sells discounted household items, furnishings, electronic goods and playthings, ceased operations at its Carterton site on Saturday March 28.

The retailer’s social media presence promoted last-minute price cuts, with clothing available from just £2 per piece.

On Thursday March 26, a spokesperson for the company indicated that all stock had been reduced by as much as 85 percent in anticipation of the weekend closure, adding that this constituted customers’ last chance to secure deals before remaining inventory was depleted and would not be replenished.

Prices were subsequently slashed further in the days leading up to the shutdown.

Other branches throughout Britain also shut their doors on the same date, including sites in Cromer, Gorleston and Bungay across Norfolk and Suffolk, with substantial discounts also taking place at additional outlets.

This comes after the business appointed administrators in January, with further shutdowns anticipated shortly in Snettisham, according to reports, as well as across the country.

The administrators explained that the company’s struggles stem from challenging market conditions, including heightened cost pressures, subdued customer demand and rising wage bills linked to regulatory changes.

These difficulties were subsequently compounded by complications surrounding its external logistics and distribution partner, which further dented performance.

The business operates a single store in Oxfordshire at its Carterton location, though Claire’s, another retailer under investment company Modella Capital that is also undergoing administration, maintains a store at the Oxford Westgate shopping centre.
