Over the past twenty years, Bicester Foodbank has offered help to residents locally, having been founded by Janet Ray.

The charity began operating in 2006 after Ms Ray, motivated by what she witnessed in New Zealand, started gathering shelf-stable provisions from eight surrounding churches, distributing them from her own garage in Launton.

During its opening twelve months, fewer than a thousand people accessed support, though the current figure has risen to almost double that amount.

Nevertheless, the charity has seen its volunteer workforce shrink by eight percent across the last half-decade.

Alison Drake, who manages Bicester Foodbank, characterised the milestone as mixed, noting the commemoration offers an opportunity to help locals understand how widespread food insecurity has become in the region.

She expressed pride in leading the service that Janet created, and highlighted the compassion shown daily by local residents.

The work matters, she explained, though fundamentally people should not require a foodbank in the first place.

Initially, building recognition presented difficulties, both in reaching those experiencing crisis and in encouraging donors to give.

Further hurdles included limited storage space, coordinating helpers, and tackling shame, all of which could only be addressed through trust built over time and strong neighbourhood bonds.

The ten-year mark coincided with moving to Market Square, a more visible and accessible town-centre spot.

This relocation strengthened collaborations with nearby groups and agencies, streamlining how referrals function.

Recent spikes in demand have stemmed from combined economic, social, and political circumstances, such as rising expenses, alterations to the benefits system, and the 2008 banking collapse.

More than sixty percent of those assisted consist of single adults, with or without children. The main struggles facing Bicester residents include escalating costs of essential items, ongoing physical or mental health conditions, and outstanding debts.

Ms Drake observed that occasionally someone arrives possessing nothing beyond what they are wearing.

In such moments, staff respond with sincere concern and empathy, ensuring visitors feel safe and cared for.

Through the wide network of referral contacts across the area, swift emergency help can be provided when necessary.

It has been reported that this assistance has prevented fatalities.

Throughout the coming year, the foodbank will stage multiple fundraising activities, from an Easter Sunday gathering to an OktoberFest occasion.

Plans encompass a dedicated harvest celebration service at St Edburg’s Church scheduled for autumn.

Ms Drake added that the anniversary represents not simply a festivity, but an opportunity to assist the community in acknowledging the scale of local food insecurity.
