Officials have launched an inquiry following a clash between people putting up England flags and local residents in Oxford.

Reports indicate a cherry picker blocked traffic on Abingdon Road during the evening of March 24, with locals expressing anger about those installing the flags.

In a statement issued late Friday, officials acknowledged the incident and confirmed an investigation had begun.

A representative said they could not yet provide further information but would share updates if circumstances changed. They added that should any offences be identified, appropriate action would be taken against those involved. The representative urged anyone with relevant footage to avoid posting it online and instead submit the material to Thames Valley Police, quoting reference number 43260144830. Anyone with questions or worries was asked to get in touch, while emergencies should always be reported by calling 999.

The MP for Oxford East, Anneliese Dodds, commented that people do have the right to display the England flag on their own property. However, she noted this was not the case here, as it appeared outsiders were involved, forcing themselves upon Abingdon Road residents and causing traffic disruption during the busy evening period. While operational decisions remained a matter for the authorities, she said she had been concerned to hear about both the obstruction caused by these individuals and their cherry picker, along with their reported threatening behaviour towards local residents.

Anna Railton, Oxford City Councillor for Hinksey Park representing Labour, stated that this group of people was not welcome in Oxford.
