A musical event at a major London venue gave young people an unforgettable experience and ignited fresh enthusiasm for what lies ahead.

Learners from Oxford Spires Academy made the journey to the Barbican Centre to witness a rendition by the London Symphony Orchestra.

The outing was part of the Anthem Aspire initiative from Anthem Schools Trust, created to provide valuable enrichment activities for almost 8,000 pupils.

Year 9 learner Emilie described it as a remarkable opportunity that felt truly enchanting when the orchestra performed.

The performance incorporated hands-on segments that invited audience involvement, with youngsters clapping and tapping their feet in time, and wrapped up with a rendition of the iconic Star Wars melody.

Year 8 learner Wilf noted that experiencing an orchestra perform live was vastly superior to recordings, explaining that the emotional impact was tangible and the Star Wars piece was fantastic.

Louise Cowley, principal at Oxford Spires Academy, expressed her pleasure that the pupils were able to attend the performance at the Barbican, adding that the school hopes it has fostered a more profound appreciation for music.

Elma Lawson, director of education at Anthem Schools Trust, emphasised the wider significance of exposing young people to the arts.

She highlighted that music possesses the ability to transform lives by building confidence and self-assurance, enabling youngsters to reach their full potential.

Anthem Aspire concentrates on delivering classroom experiences across sport, literature, music, and nature to aid pupils’ personal development and growth, with particular focus on those from underprivileged backgrounds.
