The library located within Oxford’s Westgate shopping complex was cleared this morning after fire alarms were triggered.

Members of the public were seen gathered outside the city centre retail destination earlier today (Friday, March 20), following the activation of fire safety equipment in the library section.

One image sent to this publication depicted numerous individuals waiting calmly outside the complex, awaiting permission to re-enter.

Representatives for Oxford Westgate were contacted regarding the incident, with an official subsequently confirming the alert was erroneous.

The complex, home to the library in question, draws significant footfall from shoppers both within Oxford and from further afield.

Featuring established retailers including TK Maxx, Primark, Urban Outfitters, and UNIQLO, alongside recent arrivals such as Sephora, the venue welcomes substantial visitor numbers on a daily basis.

Oxford Westgate is expanding its commercial lineup in the coming months with the eagerly awaited opening of a new Lego outlet on the lower ground floor.
