A mechanical canine from the future was the centre of attention during a school trip. The device called Spot arrived at Wood Farm Primary School for a showcase presented by the Oxford University Institute of Robotics. Professor Nick Hawes and postgraduate researchers demonstrated how such machines can reach hazardous or inaccessible locations including subterranean tunnels and ocean depths. The group additionally displayed Spot’s capacity to scale barriers and move through darkness using sophisticated sensor technology.
Year 5 student Goncalo stated that Spot was really impressive, particularly the way it scaled the platform. Classmates Emi and Dina found the mechanical creature’s engineering captivating. Emi noted that they learned how Spot perceives its surroundings and uses laser technology to detect barriers even in total darkness. Dina observed that the laser detection system must be positioned high on the back for clear visibility.
The encounter was arranged to expose pupils from Reception through Year 6 to robotics. Wood Farm Primary School anticipates the visit will cultivate lasting enthusiasm for STEM subjects and demonstrate innovative work happening locally. Eleanor Kain, a Year 1 teacher at the school, mentioned that staff were thrilled to provide all children with the opportunity to be inspired by remarkable science and engineering occurring in Oxford, and to interact with impressive mentors.
