Ex-Thames Valley Police officer faces ban for undisclosed sick leave business

A former police officer from Buckinghamshire is at risk of being barred from serving after establishing an internet-based venture while on extended sick leave.

The preliminary misconduct review for ex-Police Constable Bethany Horton is scheduled for Wednesday, March 25 at 9am via virtual means, presided over by Chief Constable Jason Hogg.

Ms Horton faces two separate allegations, according to Thames Valley Police.

A pre-hearing document outlined that the former officer worked for Thames Valley Police from March 2022 through August 2025, spending her concluding twelve months on extended medical leave.

During this period she co-founded and took on directorship responsibilities for a newly created online enterprise alongside a partner, and failed to reveal this commercial involvement despite multiple demands to do so.

Furthermore, once the misconduct inquiry commenced, she postponed submission of the necessary documentation, failed to attend arranged interviews while providing no medical justification, and subsequently tendered her resignation.

The document stated that the former officer is accused of violating professional conduct standards concerning honesty and integrity, compliance with orders and directives, and behaviour that brings the service into disrepute.

She also faces an accusation of engaging in persistent threatening behaviour and verbal abuse directed at a vulnerable person with whom she was acquainted.

Police confirmed this matter bore no connection to her duties with Thames Valley Police.

The document indicated that the former officer is accused of breaching professional standards regarding use of authority, treatment of others with respect and courtesy, and conduct that undermines public confidence.

Should gross misconduct be established, she may be entered onto the barred register, which would prohibit her from employment with any police service for a duration.
