Historic England backs Jeremy Clarkson’s Cotswolds pub planning approval

Historic England has released a communication addressed to Jeremy Clarkson regarding his establishment in the Cotswolds region of Oxfordshire.

The ex-presenter of Top Gear and The Grand Tour acquired the venue in Asthall, close to Burford, when it operated under the name The Windmill.

Following the one million pound acquisition and extensive refurbishment work, the location welcomed customers in the summer of 2024.

Its current name, The Farmer’s Dog, was chosen to reference Mr Clarkson’s farming activities in Oxfordshire, and the establishment played a prominent role throughout series four of Clarkson’s Farm.

The Prime Video documentary series, which will debut its fifth instalment in May, also centres on his agricultural holding, Diddly Squat, located in Chadlington.

Just days ago, Mr Clarkson emerged victorious in a planning dispute concerning his Cotswolds venue after an extended procedure.

The application from the 65-year-old sought approval to utilise an adjacent field as supplementary parking ahead of the busy summer period.

West Oxfordshire District Council approved Mr Clarkson’s planning request on March 18.

According to the council, The Farmer’s Dog is an established business operating from a hospitality site, and its considerable appeal generates unusually high visitor numbers to the surrounding area, benefiting the local economy. However, given the exceptional nature of this specific situation, and considering the demonstrated current need for off-site parking facilities, the public advantages of granting temporary consent are deemed to outweigh the identified negative impacts.

Historic England has now endorsed the planning proposal and offered a response.

The organisation stated that having previously participated in conversations about the parking area and the barrow, they welcomed the submission of this application, describing it as a constructive development in concluding parking-related discussions for the establishment.
