Oxfordshire’s retained firefighters are intensifying their preparations for the British Firefighter Challenge.

Lauren Addis and Lisa Norgate-Barnes are getting ready for the 2026 contest, which tests competitors both physically and mentally while raising money for emergency services charities.

One of the most demanding sections involves the casualty drag, where participants must haul a 70kg mannequin while dressed in full firefighting kit.

Lisa Norgate-Barnes expressed gratitude for backing from Agility EOR. She noted that the British Firefighter Challenge ranks among the most gruelling events they undertake, and having proper training conditions creates substantial benefits not only for competition day but also for their professional abilities and self-assurance.

Previously, the duo had been practising with a 55kg mannequin affectionately named Tom after the actor Tom Hardy, which proved insufficiently heavy to replicate actual competition conditions.

Their training received significant backing when Agility EOR supplied a proper 70kg training mannequin.

Mr Barnes observed that he has witnessed the extraordinary commitment involved in getting ready for the British Firefighter Challenge. The physical strain is considerable, with competitors donning a full three-and-a-half-stone fire kit. When they identified a practical way to assist Lisa and Lauren, it was something they took genuine pride in doing.

The pair will carry on training with the upgraded equipment ahead of the 2026 event.
