A milestone centenary was observed with a royal greeting, a visit from the town’s first citizen, and a rendition of the traditional birthday song.

On Monday 16 March, Wallingford’s mayor Ros Lester made her way to Westgate House Care Home to mark the 100th birthday of Alice Betty Peet, universally referred to as Betty.

Ms Lester expressed that it was an honour to visit Betty and take part in such a wonderful celebration, acknowledging both her remarkable lifespan and her ties to the local community.

Betty was joined by companions and relatives for an energetic birthday gathering and was delivered a message of congratulations from Their Majesties, The King and Queen.

She resided for the majority of her years in Sonning Common. Betty’s mother and father operated the Bird in Hand establishment and she gained entry to Henley Grammar School by way of a scholarship.

She maintained her own household until she turned 96 and remained unmarried throughout her life.

Her pair of nieces, who attended the festivities, represent her nearest living kin.

The mayor’s visit fell within her civic responsibilities, which encompass marking important community occasions.

Wallingford Town Council functions as the local authority for the town, with a population of approximately 11,600 residents.

The council handles the upkeep of communal gardens, supervision of allotment plots, promotion of resident welfare, and collaborates with district and county authorities to provide numerous services.
