A motorist has received a £200 penalty for travelling at excessive speed on the M40 in Oxfordshire.

While on duty along the M40 between Thame and Bicester on Sunday, March 22, officers from Thames Valley Police noticed a car moving at a speed described as unusually low in the nearside lane.

This created possible problems for other vehicles, and as police drew level with the car, they clearly observed the driver holding a mobile phone and trying to hide it, according to the force.

The motorist was pulled over and given a traffic violation notice, and because the car lacked UK registration, a £200 on-the-spot penalty was issued along with six points on their driving record, officers stated.

During the same patrol, officers came across a vehicle at Weston-on-the-Green on the A34 that had been previously stopped the previous month for operating without proper documentation.

The identical driver was encountered again, this occasion driving without L-plates visible and without an accompanying qualified driver.

Police reported the driver for the violations, and the car was subsequently taken into custody.

Slightly further away in Aylesbury, officers performed speed checks in targeted areas after local residents raised concerns.

Several motorists were detected travelling above the permitted speed and processed as appropriate, Thames Valley Police reported.

A spokesperson for Thames Valley Police explained that their Roads Policing Special Constable Tasking Team conducted proactive patrols that day, identifying and addressing traffic violations to maintain road safety. The operations are designed to minimise hazards, address serial violators, and ensure all road users remain protected. Motorists are reminded to avoid phone use while driving, learner drivers must have proper supervision and visible L-plates, and all drivers should follow speed restrictions and operate vehicles carefully.
