Oxford has held its first-ever Indie Oxford Day, a dedicated event showcasing the city’s independent business sector.
Organised by Independent Oxford on Saturday, March 21, the inaugural celebration aimed to encourage residents and visitors to shop at, enjoy and back small retailers, coffee shops and similar enterprises across the city.
Annabel Lee, community manager at Independent Oxford, explained that independent businesses embody the character and interests of Oxfordshire’s population, and set the area apart from other locations. She noted that these enterprises make towns, villages and the city itself far more vibrant and appealing by offering destinations to visit, quality products to purchase and a strong local identity. Choosing to spend money at independent traders directly benefits neighbourhood enterprises, sustains employment and strengthens community bonds, she added.
The Old Fire Station venue played host to a ‘Green Day (Not The Band)’ gathering that recognised organisations providing alternatives to purchasing new items and which prioritise ethical and environmental standards. Patrons at The Market Tap in the Covered Market who mentioned Indie Oxford Day received a £5 drink and automatic entry into a competition offering £50 for the Tap Social Movement. Customers purchasing two large 250g gift-boxed candles from The Herberow Candle Co were offered a complimentary 180g candle. Additionally, a temporary studio at Kennington Scout Hut operated by Laura Greene provided miniature portraits for dogs.
Over the past eleven years, Independent Oxford has championed and supported Oxfordshire’s independent business sector. More than 180 enterprises have joined as members, spanning retail, hospitality, wellness and creative industries. All independent traders operating in Oxfordshire were encouraged to participate in Indie Oxford Day.
Jacqui Thorndyke, digital manager at Independent Oxford, stated that the organisation aims to spread appreciation and celebrate the outstanding enterprises that contribute to Oxfordshire being an attractive place to live and shop. She suggested that Indie Oxford Day provides an ideal opportunity to share recommendations, discover something different and learn about other excellent independent businesses across the county.
Those living in or visiting Oxfordshire can support independent businesses through several straightforward approaches. These include choosing local shops for regular purchases such as morning coffee, attending events hosted by independent venues, sharing recommendations for favourite traders, subscribing to email updates or following them on social media platforms.
In a statement, Independent Oxford emphasised that consumer spending remains within the local area, sustaining livelihoods, creating employment and channelling investment directly into the community. Independent businesses also bring character and variety to commercial districts, delivering personalised service, distinctive products and experiences unavailable elsewhere.
