School leaders convened to consider prohibiting handheld devices in educational settings.

Matthew Barber was present at the gathering held at Aureus Secondary School in Didcot, convened by headteacher Kirsty Rogers.

The agenda centred on introducing a device-free approach, which involves using secure storage pouches.

Mr Barber observed that although mobile phones are essential for numerous people, they can divert students’ attention, interfere with lessons, and result in behavioural issues and reduced academic performance during school time.

He accepted that there may be obstacles to a device-free policy, including phones linked to medical equipment and pupils who care for family members, but stated these concerns can be addressed.

Mr Barber emphasised the advantages of eliminating such distractions, noting it could lower incidents of disturbance, absence, and harassment.

He has already reached out to additional schools to explore sharing effective approaches throughout the Thames Valley region.

Aureus Secondary School intends to prohibit devices, with students storing them in lockable pouches throughout the school day.
