A memorial to Wallingford’s most famous resident has been given a fresh new look thanks to the efforts of a community organisation.

The local Women’s Institute took it upon themselves to give the Agatha Christie monument located on the Kinecroft a thorough cleaning after hearing from the artist who created it.

The celebrated author made her home at Winterbrook House near Wallingford following her marriage to Max Mallowan in 1934, residing there until she passed away in 1976. She remains a significant figure in the town.

The monument to the world’s best-selling author was placed on the Kinecroft in September 2023, and the town museum houses a permanent display in her honour.

This year, following its reopening for the 2026 season, the museum will host a dedicated exhibition commemorating the 50th anniversary of the author’s passing.

The annual Agatha Christie Weekend will also make its return this year from May 22 to May 24, featuring an extensive programme of presentations, activities and performances to honour her enduring legacy.
