David Matthews MBE, 65, walking 6,000 miles to visit every Samaritans branch

A 65-year-old man is travelling on foot more than 6,000 miles to raise awareness about the Samaritans charity.

David Matthews MBE launched his second Listening Walk in September 2025, with the goal of reaching every Samaritans branch across the UK and Ireland.

After finishing an equivalent expedition in 2021, Mr Matthews has been distributing over 9,000 contact cards and highlighting the organisation’s round-the-clock support service.

While not describing himself as someone who prioritises fitness, Mr Matthews expressed his commitment to helping others recognise how vital it is to discuss mental health matters.

He explained that most people are aware of someone dealing with mental health difficulties, yet many remain unaware of how beneficial it can be to talk things through or how straightforward it is to contact the Samaritans. He noted that regardless of what someone is experiencing, that initial phone call could represent the beginning of discovering a fresh perspective.

Mr Matthews began volunteering as a listening support worker for the Samaritans in 2009.

During his initial Listening Walk spanning 2019 to 2021, he gathered almost £30,000 in contributions, with every pound donated assisting individuals who reach out to the Samaritans.

Mr Matthews covers his own accommodation and equipment expenses independently.

In 2025, he was honoured with an MBE by King Charles III for his dedicated work supporting the charity.

Having already reached more than 100 branches to date, Mr Matthews is anticipated to arrive at the Oxford Samaritans branch on March 30.

Supporters can follow his journey via his website, thelisteningwalk.com, where information about making donations to the Samaritans is also available.

The Samaritans helpline can be dialled free of charge on 116 123, including from mobile phones without any available credit.
