An evening cycling event featuring illuminated bicycles took place to champion a new off-road pathway.

The gathering in Thame on Friday 20 March saw three dozen participants in vibrant attire cycling alongside bikes decked out with fairy lights. The demonstration expressed enthusiasm for the anticipated Haddenham–Thame Greenway.

The proposed route aims to establish a secure passage connecting the two communities, enabling residents to travel on foot, by bicycle, or using mobility devices without encountering vehicle traffic.

Sarah Green, one of the event’s coordinators, highlighted that the greenway would bring significant benefits to local residents, particularly young families seeking a safe space free from traffic for cycling, scooting and running.

She added that the route would also serve those commuting to the railway station, individuals with mobility challenges, and visitors from Haddenham coming to Thame for shopping and social activities.

The Glow Ride drew inspiration from comparable events staged throughout Britain to raise awareness about safety worries for women using active travel routes after darkness falls.

Cathy Gaulter-Carter, another co-organiser, explained that numerous women and girls feel apprehensive about cycling due to heavy traffic on roads.

She emphasised the need for the Greenway so that even very young children can experience cycling, walking and wheeling in the open air.

The initiative has garnered substantial public support, with a petition advocating for a safe and sustainable route accumulating over 3,600 signatures.

The petition is scheduled to be officially submitted to Oxfordshire County Council on Tuesday 24 March.

It was also delivered to 10 Downing Street during the previous month, with backing from Henley and Thame MP Freddie van Mierlo and Mid Buckinghamshire MP Greg Smith.
