Five Oxfordshire primary schools to expand nursery places after high demand

Published on

Educators have voiced their enthusiasm as primary schools in Oxfordshire, encompassing three institutions within Oxford itself, are set to grow their nursery programmes after experiencing strong demand for enrolment spots.

Additional financial support has been revealed to increase the number of places available for children aged up to five years old throughout the region.

Among those on the list are the John Henry Newman Academy and St John Fisher Catholic Primary School, both situated in Littlemore, alongside Tyndale Community School located on William Morris Close in Oxford.

Beyond the city boundaries, Drayton Community Primary School close to Abingdon and All Saints Church of England Primary School in Didcot will similarly expand their nursery capabilities.

St John Fisher primary school will be establishing accommodation for as many as 10 two-year-old children commencing from September 2027.

Headteacher Paul Higgins stated that applications for their nursery and reception classes have exceeded available places for the past two years, making them thrilled to proceed with this development.

He noted that this reflects the appetite for places at the school and, crucially, the requirement for additional high-quality early years provision in the area.

Construction work will take place on the premises to create the necessary accommodation, and they are extremely pleased about being able to provide a caring, joyful and ambitious setting for their youngest pupils. Given the planned new developments in the vicinity, such as those on Sandy Lane playing fields, it is vital that central government is allocating resources to assist local expansion efforts.

Littlemore has scarce options for two-year-old provision, so it is wonderful that both St John Fisher and John Henry Newman have received approval for their expansions.

At Tyndale Community School, Headteacher Matthew Watt explained that the funding will enable them to extend their proposals to establish a fresh nursery for 26 children aged three to four, while also accommodating up to 16 infants as young as nine months. This will be introduced gradually beginning in September 2026.

He continued that at Tyndale, they are committed to doing everything possible to offer support to children and families from the earliest stage.

That is why, with backing from the Oxford Diocesan Schools Trust, they chose to seek extra funding to deliver nursery provision.

This represents something the local community has been requesting for some time, and they are truly honoured to have succeeded with their bid.

He mentioned that this marks a significant achievement for the school and demonstrates its ongoing efforts to adapt to meet the evolving requirements of the local population.

Some modifications to the current building will be necessary to make this work, though this construction will not interfere with their current excellent pupils.

They will keep residents informed as schemes advance, though anyone wishing to learn more should make contact.

According to the Department for Education, parents could reduce their childcare expenditure by as much as 8,000 pounds annually thanks to these new places.

Education secretary Bridget Phillipson stated that their school-based nurseries are already assisting in filling shortages in areas where childcare is most difficult to locate, offering children the solid foundation they deserve and enabling parents to obtain childcare nearby.

By enlarging these nurseries further and directing them toward the communities that require them most, they are ensuring additional families can take advantage of quality early years education while implementing practical assistance to help with everyday expenses.

For too long, a child’s postcode has determined their future prospects.

This administration was elected to transform that situation, beginning with granting every child the finest possible beginning and guaranteeing all families can obtain the childcare they require, regardless of their location.
