A popular police horse is looking forward to a well-earned rest after undergoing surgery to remove one of her eyes.

Luna, who serves with Thames Valley Police, gained recognition last year when she attended Royal Ascot sporting specially made sunglasses for horses.

The protective eyewear was necessary because of a condition called equine recurrent uveitis, which also required her to wear a UV-protective fly mask. The condition has now led to the loss of vision in one eye.

Thames Valley Police confirmed that Luna will soon be moving to The Horses Trust to live out her days alongside a horse named Atlas. Her duties have been gradually reduced and have now ceased entirely as she prepares for a comfortable retirement.

The force stated that Luna became something of a local celebrity following her appearance at the royal racecourse. While the custom shades gave her an air of elegance, they were a necessary measure due to her ongoing health issue, which also called for the additional protection of a specialist fly mask.

Despite receiving an implant, eye drops and other treatments, it was determined that she would unfortunately never regain sight in the affected eye. After discussions with veterinary specialists and staff at The Horses Trust, the decision was made to proceed with the removal procedure, which has been completed successfully.

By removing the problematic eye, Luna can now spend her retirement in comfort, able to bask in sunshine without experiencing irritation or the need for protective accessories. The force indicated that further updates will be shared once she begins her transition to The Horses Trust.
