Helen Pike will leave her position as head of a prestigious independent school in Oxford after more than a decade in charge.

Magdalen College School announced that Ms Pike would stand down as Master at the conclusion of the 2026/27 academic year.

The institution, located in east Oxford, is among the highest-performing schools nationally, placing among the top 20 independent secondary schools in The Sunday Times Parent Power Schools Guide 2026.

As the first woman to serve as Master at the school, Ms Pike led governors through one of the most consequential decisions in its history: transitioning to fully co-educational admission from 2027 onwards.

Although the sixth form has welcomed both boys and girls for the past 15 years, the school confirmed last month that co-education would extend across all year groups over the next ten years.

Ms Pike expressed her deep affection for the school and described leading it as an honour. She explained that announcing her departure well in advance would give the institution the best possible chance of securing the ideal replacement for September 2027. She stated her intention to continue working tirelessly for the school’s benefit until that point.

She said she looked forward to the next stage of her career, building upon three decades of professional experience and accomplishment. Noting that she had consistently urged students to embrace sensible risks and pursue creative or unconventional paths when circumstances felt right, she explained she was now following her own advice.

Under Ms Pike’s leadership, the school received recognition as a Top 20 Independent School and South East School of the Year by the Sunday Times, as well as winning the Independent School of the Year award for Social Mobility.

In a letter to the school community, chair of governors Bob Price expressed his gratitude, describing Ms Pike as an exceptional leader who would depart with sincere thanks for her distinguished tenure. He noted she would hand over an institution in outstanding condition for whoever follows.

As part of its growth strategy, the school is making plans to construct a new Science, Library and Partnerships building.

A spokesperson indicated this facility would provide an opportunity to transform the senior school site as staff prepare for full co-education.

She previously outlined that the vision was to establish a science building of sector-leading quality in central Oxford, enabling the school to support an ambitious and forward-looking science programme while expanding into emerging and rapidly developing fields such as robotics, artificial intelligence and big data.
