A man and a woman from Oxford have been charged with public order-related offences following their arrests on Tuesday, March 24, in connection with an incident that prompted a large-scale police response in the city centre.

Thames Valley Police announced the charges on Wednesday, March 25, confirming that the pair were detained following an occurrence in Bonn Square on Tuesday afternoon. Officers were called to provide immediate support to colleagues on the scene.

According to a statement from the force, specialist units were called out while officers were managing the detention of two individuals they were seeking who were not cooperating with police directions. The situation necessitated a substantial operational response.

The statement indicated that no one suffered any injuries during the incident, including both the officers present and the individuals involved.

George Geoghegan, a 38-year-old resident of Cranmer Road in Oxford, appeared in custody on Wednesday. He faces one charge of assault by beating alongside a public order offence and is scheduled to appear at High Wycombe Magistrates’ Court on Thursday.

Roisin McLaughlin, aged 35 and living on Thame Road in Oxford, was also charged with two counts of racially aggravated public order offences. She was released on conditional bail on Wednesday and is due to appear at Oxford Magistrates’ Court on May 27.

The force initially provided incorrect information to this publication, stating that both people arrested at Bonn Square on Tuesday had been released without any further action being taken.

A Thames Valley Police representative clarified on Thursday evening that McLaughlin had in fact been released on police bail for the offences she was initially arrested for at Bonn Square, adding that while she had been charged, those specific charges relate to separate incidents.
