Oxford University tops world rankings in four subjects in QS 2026

Oxford has achieved the status of world leader in four individual subjects while also securing the overall top position in one academic field, according to the highly regarded QS World Rankings 2026.

The institution claimed first place in the listings for Anatomy and Physiology, Anthropology, Geography and Modern Languages.

This means Oxford holds the distinction of being the UK university with the greatest number of courses recognised as the finest globally.

The institution also claimed the worldwide number one position in arts and humanities as a broad subject area, and achieved top-three status across four of the five major subject categories assessed.

Oxford’s vice-chancellor, Professor Irene Tracey, stated that the university’s strength stems from the comprehensive and profound nature of its academic work, and that these latest QS subject rankings provide compelling validation of this sustained commitment to supporting all fields of study.

She noted that achieving first place worldwide in four subjects represents an exceptional accomplishment that demonstrates the commitment of Oxford’s academic community.

She added that holding the position of UK university with the most subjects ranked at the global pinnacle reflects not merely excellence but also the collaborative and curiosity-driven environment that supports both foundational and applied research.

She expressed particular pleasure that Oxford had also been acknowledged as the world’s leading institution for arts and humanities overall.

She pointed out that at a time when the university is establishing its new centre for the humanities alongside an ambitious Arts and Cultural Programme, this represents both a timely confirmation of that work and a recognition of the essential contribution the humanities make to comprehending ourselves, our societies and our shared future.

She emphasised that as an institution, Oxford values its intellectual heritage while continuously refreshing it, ensuring that both its teaching and research benefit the world through insight, creativity and purposeful direction.

The latest QS World University Rankings by Subject cover 55 individual subjects across five broad categories and evaluated the standing of over 1,700 universities worldwide.

This follows Oxford’s achievement earlier this year of securing first place globally in the Times Higher Education subject rankings for Medicine and Computer Science, marking the eighth consecutive year it has held the top position in both disciplines.

Within the QS World Subject Rankings, Oxford’s School of Geography and the Environment maintained its leading position for the sixteenth consecutive year among the 251 institutions evaluated, while the Department of Physiology, Anatomy and Genetics has held first place for seven years running.

The School of Anthropology reclaimed its position at number one for the fourth occasion in five years, and Modern Languages returned to the top spot this year after three years of being ranked second.

Professor Dan Grimley, who leads the humanities division at the university, expressed his satisfaction that the department’s capabilities had been acknowledged through these results.

He stated that excellent research and specialist knowledge from the humanities are vital for addressing the significant issues facing the twenty-first century.

He mentioned that graduates and their prospective employers have indicated that the abilities they developed through humanities study provide them with an edge when managing careers being transformed by artificial intelligence in unprecedented ways.
