Safety warnings issued after children seen jumping into river at bridge

The Wallingford town leader has sounded a serious alert about leaping from a bridge into the River Thames as the heat returns to the area.

Councillor Nigel Hughes, who serves as mayor of Wallingford, stated that young people are taking an enormous risk after reports emerged of several individuals jumping from Wallingford Bridge.

Officers attended the scene following the incident, with cautions issued along the riverbank urging people to remain safe during the sweltering conditions.

According to the Met Office, temperatures in Wallingford will once again reach above 30 degrees Celsius this week.

Additionally, pupils at Wallingford School will finish their term for the summer on July 17.

Councillor Hughes highlighted the presence of unseen submerged debris resting on the riverbed.

He stated that Wallingford Bridge may appear appealing as a summer pastime, yet diving from it represents an enormous gamble with one’s life. He explained that individuals cannot determine what debris has collected beneath the arches, how shallow the water has become, or how rapidly cold water shock can incapacitate even the most accomplished swimmer. While the Thames is meant to be savoured, he urged people to do so safely, as a single instant of poor judgment simply is not worth risking a life-changing injury.

Although Wallingford Bridge falls outside the jurisdiction of the town council, the authority has encouraged visitors to make responsible use of the riverfront.

A spokesperson for Wallingford Town Council stated that the council wishes for everyone to experience everything Wallingford offers this summer, including the attractive riverside area, however no excursion justifies accepting needless hazards. The spokesperson asked that individuals remain cautious near water, watch out for one another, and make prudent decisions.

Thames Valley Police indicated that bridge jumping may constitute anti-social behaviour when it creates alarm or upset, and could lead to council enforcement measures or penalties where regulations exist.

A spokesperson outlined multiple grave hazards, including unpredictable water depth and hidden objects beneath the surface, powerful currents capable of swiftly defeating even confident swimmers, potential for severe injury upon entry because of the height involved, risk to other waterway users such as boats, paddleboarders, and nearby swimmers, plus the danger of cold water shock.

Cautions about jumping from bridges at Wallingford or Shillingford have been issued almost every year due to the associated dangers.

In 2003, 27-year-old RAF serviceman William Lovelock lost his life after striking his head following a jump from Shillingford Bridge.

The May heatwave resulted in 15 deaths across the UK related to water incidents, among them Baltazar L’Quy, a 14-year-old youth who perished after getting into trouble in the River Thames near Oxford.
