Oxford-based charity secures major funding for food poverty fight

Published on

A collaborative initiative headquartered in Oxford that tackles food hardship has secured financial backing to extend its operations.

The OX4 Food Crew, which functions across East Oxford, has obtained a three-year grant from The National Lottery Community Fund for the second time.

This monetary assistance will facilitate collaboration among organisations and community members to address the root causes of food insecurity within the OX4 area.

A spokesperson for the OX4 Food Crew explained that the funding acknowledges that addressing food insecurity requires more than providing food alone, and involves considerations of power dynamics, representation, and systemic transformation. The spokesperson added that by directing resources toward community-based organisations and creating leadership opportunities for individuals who have experienced disadvantage firsthand, The National Lottery Community Fund is enabling communities to develop the capacity to collectively address the challenges affecting them.

OX4 Food Crew comprises eight neighbourhood-level grassroots organisations based in eastern Oxford, encompassing districts such as Cowley and Little Leys.

The grant will allocate funds towards shared infrastructure, collaborative activities, investigation work, and skills development for community organisations.

These capacities aim to create a more unified and strategic response to food insecurity alongside related concerns such as health inequalities, deprivation, and precarious housing situations.

Instead of focusing solely on urgent relief measures, the programme will enhance community resilience and empower people who have encountered hardship themselves to drive transformation through locally-led investigation and mobilisation.

The scheme will be carried out in conjunction with community charities and the city council to forge a more coordinated approach to food insecurity.

The National Lottery Community Fund allocates contributions from National Lottery players toward community initiatives, with an ambition to distribute £4 billion to such causes by 2030.
