Oxford Surgical Team Performs Nine Procedures in Under Eight Hours

Published on

A dedicated operating session at Churchill Hospital resulted in more than double the number of procedures normally completed in a single day by Oxford University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust.

The programme concentrated on gland-related surgeries, with nine operations completed within under eight hours.

A specialist surgical crew carried out the work, which included two thyroid day-surgery cases – the initial such attempts in a decade.

Shad Khan, a consultant surgeon who leads the endocrine surgery department at OUH, explained that the team accomplished significantly more procedures than would normally be scheduled for a comparable timeframe.

The day’s accomplishments demonstrated what can be achieved through strong teamwork and shared dedication to outstanding patient treatment.

It showcases the dedication and impressive work of our personnel, combined with the meticulous planning required to coordinate the session’s logistics and running.

The Super Surgery Day concept aims to maximise weekend operating theatre availability, reduce how long patients spend on waiting lists, and allow individuals to receive treatment more promptly.

OUH confirmed the latest session passed without any complications.

The group included surgeons, anaesthetists, nursing staff specialising in anaesthesia, an instrument team, and a senior specialist, supported by healthcare assistants and clerical workers.

Every patient received phone assessments with their operating surgeon and anaesthetist during the preceding week.

Lisa Glynn, head of clinical operations at OUH, noted that the team remains focused on maintaining high-quality treatment while reducing waiting periods at the trust.

Successfully completing this Super Surgery Day and launching the thyroid day surgery programme represents a significant and noteworthy milestone.
