A man with an extensive criminal record comprising more than 120 previous offences has been sentenced to prison after three kilograms of cocaine were discovered in his vehicle.

Michael Joyce, aged 46 and residing in Droylsden, Manchester, entered guilty pleas at Oxford Crown Court on Friday, September 4, to charges of possessing a class A drug with intent to supply, namely cocaine, alongside possession of a class B drug, namely cannabis.

He additionally admitted to driving while disqualified and operating a vehicle without the required third-party insurance coverage.

The prosecution, led by Donna Longcroft, informed the court that Joyce was intercepted by officers at Oxford Services on June 17 this year while travelling in a Vauxhall Insignia.

The car had been connected to class A drug distribution operations.

The court was informed that officers discovered three kilograms of cocaine, formatted in block form, within the vehicle’s rear storage area.

A mobile telephone was also recovered from the dashboard compartment.

Also seized from the car were six hundred pounds in currency and a modest quantity of cannabis.

Following his arrest, Joyce acknowledged ownership of the cannabis.

The prosecution maintained that Joyce occupied a significant role and demonstrated awareness of the operation’s magnitude.

Proceedings revealed that Joyce possessed 48 prior convictions encompassing 129 separate offences.

This represented his inaugural conviction for drug trafficking.

Defence counsel Kerrie Rowan submitted that Joyce had considerable experience of court processes and had endured substantial upheaval in recent years, having lost seven family members within a three-year period.

She described his physical health challenges and indicated that imprisonment would present particular difficulties.

She emphasised that no prior drug dealing convictions existed and that her client had functioned merely as a courier, deriving no profit from drug sales and possessing no knowledge of activities beyond his limited function.

Presiding over the case, Recorder Elanor Sanderson observed that Joyce understood his recipients were handling quantities measured in kilograms, that he had provided a restricted service under instruction, that this constituted his first drug supply conviction despite numerous acquisitive and driving-related offences, and that he had experienced genuine personal hardship.

She accepted that custody would be challenging given his documented health concerns and acknowledged his appreciation of the seriousness of his conduct.

She noted that illegal substances cause devastating harm and that he had contributed to that damage, concluding that his record of disregarding legal requirements was substantial.

Joyce received an immediate prison term of 42 months.

A driving prohibition of 48 months was also imposed.

Orders were granted for the seizure and destruction of the mobile devices, the controlled substances, and the currency.
