Oxfordshire County Council is considering the introduction of a new signalised crossing point to enhance safety for those walking or cycling in the vicinity.
The local authority has put forward plans for a Toucan crossing along the A417 Reading Road in Harwell, specifically in the section situated between the B4493 Wantage Road and Winaway junction.
Toucan crossings feature traffic signals and are constructed to accommodate both foot traffic and bicycle users simultaneously.
According to the council, the initiative is intended to provide greater protection for unprotected road users throughout the surrounding area.
A period of public consultation has commenced, during which community members are invited to submit their opinions regarding the proposed development.
The deadline for responses is set for 5pm on Friday, October 9.
The council has stated that residents should review the comprehensive documentation available for this consultation and ensure sufficient time is taken to finish the questionnaire, emphasising that community perspectives hold significance.
The council has indicated that responses must be submitted and received by 5pm on Friday 09 October 2026.
Should the proposal receive approval, the scheme would progress towards the detailed design phase.
The authority will evaluate all submitted responses and, in the event that formal objections are submitted, will compile documentation for presentation to the Cabinet Member responsible for Highway Management.
This matter would then be examined during an open session scheduled for later in 2026.
Residents retain the option to request an opportunity to address attendees at that gathering.
Meeting documentation and supporting papers would be made available via the Oxfordshire County Council online platform approximately seven days preceding the scheduled date.
