The actress known for her role in the Harry Potter franchise is scheduled to appear at a well-known Oxford bookshop for a signing event.

Miriam Margolyes, who celebrated her 85th birthday this year, will return to the city where she was born on Saturday 12 September.

The event at Blackwell’s on Broad Street runs from midday until 1pm, providing fans with the opportunity to obtain personal copies of her latest publication.

The work turns a sharp focus on the British national character and the various traits that define the population.

Subjects examined throughout the pages include queuing customs, bodily functions, regional speech patterns, peculiar behaviours, meteorological preoccupations, as well as matters of intimacy and vulgarity.

The writing combines sharp humour with frank commentary, including colourful language throughout.

Beneath the satirical treatment of British quirks lies a darker observation that the nation has strayed from its proper path.

In comments about the political landscape, Margolyes expressed concern that the country faces a proliferation of untrustworthy figures in positions of power whose influence shapes daily existence in unprecedented ways.

She contended that political discourse has become particularly burdensome, and pointed specifically to three world leaders whose actions, in her view, have damaged public confidence in both the present era and prospects for what lies ahead.

Within the publication, critical remarks are directed at political figures including Nigel Farage, whom she refers to by a dismissive alternative name, and former prime minister Boris Johnson.

Attendees are required to register in advance through the Eventbrite platform.
