Brewers Fayre closes Bicester site as UK restaurant chain exits market after 43 years

Published on

The restaurant chain Brewers Fayre has ceased operations across all its United Kingdom locations, marking the end of more than four decades on British high streets.

The company, which established its first outlet in 1981, completed its withdrawal from the British market on the seventh of September.

Among the establishments affected was the Bicester branch situated on Oxford Road in Oxfordshire.

The closure forms part of an extensive restructuring programme unveiled by parent company Whitbread, which anticipates achieving savings of £250 million through the strategic realignment.

The reorganization extends to all establishments operating under the Beefeater, Cookhouse + Pub, Table Table, and Bar + Block brands, which will likewise cease operations.

Whitbread intends to repurpose certain former restaurant premises for additional Premier Inn hotel accommodation and will divest freehold assets valued at approximately £1.5 billion to support continued expansion.

The hospitality group currently maintains a portfolio of roughly 86,600 hotel rooms, with projections to increase this capacity to 96,000 by the conclusion of the 2031 financial year.

Dominic Paul, Whitbread’s chief executive, explained that the company continuously evaluates ways to enhance performance.

He cited substantial increases in business rates and national insurance contributions alongside market valuation considerations as factors prompting a thorough examination of available strategic alternatives to optimise long-term value.

The process has been comprehensive, with all possibilities considered objectively.

The newly announced five-year strategy leverages existing strengths while accelerating the overall direction of the business.

This approach aims to reshape Whitbread into a more profitable hotel-focused enterprise with improved returns.

The company intends to pursue accelerated growth to enhance customer experience while delivering quality returns for investors.
