The veteran broadcaster Bob Harris has commenced an intensive programme of intravenous radiotherapy treatment.

Harris, aged 80, disclosed earlier this year that his prostate cancer had metastasised to his upper spine.

During June, he announced his departure from his Radio 2 programmes Sounds Of The 70s and Radio 2 Country to prioritise his medical care and recuperation.

In an online statement, the presenter expressed how much he had missed his programmes while appreciating the opportunity to enjoy extended time at home during the summer months.

He noted feeling fortunate to have shared memorable occasions with loved ones, though he acknowledged the disease had progressively taken a stronger hold on his condition.

Despite reporting continued good health, Harris explained that he had now embarked upon an intensive radiotherapy regimen that medical professionals anticipated would help manage the illness.

He expected to receive results in the near future.

The broadcaster characterised his situation as an emotional journey while maintaining an upbeat outlook.

He described himself as inherently optimistic and committed to maximising each day.

He noted that the experience was not without difficulty, recalling an emotional moment upon leaving hospital alongside his son Miles.

Harris extended words of encouragement to others navigating similar challenges, urging perseverance and determination in the face of adversity.

He expressed gratitude for the overwhelming messages of support from well-wishers and affirmed his intention to continue living fully.

The presenter confirmed he remained active professionally and looked forward to performing at a celebration of music event scheduled for December at the Royal Albert Hall.

He described his decision to step back from his radio roles earlier in the year as particularly challenging given his extensive career spanning nearly six decades in broadcasting.

His contributions included work for Radio 1, BBC Six Music, and the celebrated television series Old Grey Whistle Test.
